What Makes a Methodist?

Hands resting on an open Bible

First and foremost, a Methodist is a Christian. Methodism has a history going back 300 years. You may find some of the answers here helpful. When you’ve had a look at these answers, do come to any of the churches of the Enfield Circuit for help with working it out for day-to-day living, for you!

“God loves you and wants you to understand what that means for you.”

The calling of the Methodist Church is to respond to the gospel of God’s love in Christ and to live out its discipleship in worship and mission.

Worship

The Church exists to increase awareness of God’s presence and to celebrate God’s love.

Learning & Caring

The Church exists to help people grow and learn as Christians, through mutual support and care.

Service

The Church exists to be a good neighbour to people in need and to challenge injustice.

Evangelism

The Church exists to make more followers of Jesus Christ.

Methodist Distinctives

What Makes Us Distinctive?

While we share the core Christian faith with all denominations, Methodism places special emphasis on certain elements:

1

All Are Welcome

A belief that no one is beyond the reach of God’s love and that God’s love is for everybody, not a chosen few.

2

Social Action

A major emphasis on Social Action and fighting for fairness & justice in each person’s own local community and throughout the world.

Ephesians 4: 2–6
“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit... one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all.”
